Design and Analysis of 15 MW SPM Vernier Generator for Direct-Drive Wind Turbine Applications

This paper presents the design and an analysis of a surface PM vernier generator (SPMVG) for MW-scale direct-drive (DD) wind turbine application. An SPMVG has advantage higher torque density; however, especially at power ratings with increased electrical loadings, factor worsens there are some serious concerns including magnetic saturation cores demagnetization. These issues directly related to machine parameters such as dimensions, applied loading, slot geometry choice slot–pole combination. It is determined that depending on thickness few other variables, each combination optimal value specific loading. The use loading ensures not saturated, performance optimum unnecessarily degraded. Moreover, under certain constraints, criteria developed ensure proper various entailed variables. By using criteria, trends electromagnetic performances variation in discussed. obtained clearly show offers density factor; thus, it serves guide selection considering required and/or limit. Finally, by approach, rated 15 MW designed; objectives maximize per volume limit 0.4. aspects designed comprehensively compared against conventional DD generator.
